In the past, many people considered that Melbourne was the coffee capital of Australia, and it is true that in the early days that is how many things happened in Australia, seen from espresso coffee. However, in the mid-1990s, we confirm that Sydney had taken over Melbourne as Australia's coffee capital, and over time many people agreed.
In recent years, however, the Melbourne espresso scene has flourished and is now arguably Australia's most vibrant coffee city. We will soon be conducting our annual review of the best coffee in Melbourne, but names like Proud Mary, Auction Rooms and Seven Seeds are likely to appear. Together with the industry's unconditional St Ali, they represent a new wave of cafe espresso expertise that has influenced this cosmopolitan coffee country and has put Melbourne at the forefront.
Coffee in Australia has reached a peak where there is now probably a greater concentration of the best coffee in the world in a single city than anywhere else in the world, including Italy. And as a world-class coffee maker, our job is to control those things. We were surprised that there has simply not been a city that has developed a center of excellence in espresso coffee like Melbourne in our travels around the world.
We have qualified the best coffees in Melbourne for five years and this work is becoming increasingly difficult simply because in Australia in general, in Melbourne specifically, we have many options to choose from!
